Trappist beers are one of the most well-known products which Trappist monasteries produce and sell commercially. La Trappe is one of the eleven breweries may carry the name “Trappist”.
The International Trappist Association grants a monastery the right to use the label "Authentic Trappist Product". A “Trappist” has to satisfy a number of strict criteria proper to the "Authentic Trappist Product" label before it may bear this name. Firstly, the beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. Also, the brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life.
The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture. The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need.
The La Trappe name comes from that of the French abbey of ‘Notre-Dame de la Grande Trappe’ in the
Normandy village of Soligny-la-Trappe, also known as ‘La Trappe’. This is where the order of Trappist
monks originated. As far as back as 1140, Benedictine monks ran a chapel here, which later became the
Cistercian ‘La Trappe’ monastery.
